Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Master of Social Work from the University of Connecticut

My name is Amy Schumaker and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Oregon and four other states. I hold a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Connecticut, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work with a Minor in Psychology from Cleveland State University. I live in Texas, however, I grew up just south of Portland, Oregon, and understand the mentality that an Oregonian may have.

I specialize in working with adults (18 years and older) who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief/loss, substance abuse, and disordered eating such as binge eating. I have many populations that I enjoy working with in particular women and older adults. I have a passion in working with the adoption triad, such as, birth-mothers who have placed their children into adoption in addition to working with individuals who struggle with ADHD. Past clients would tell you I have made them feel seen, heard and validated.

My therapeutic approach uses a variety of modalities as not one approach works for all individuals or situations, however, I tend to use most Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). I believe in creating a collaborative and non-judgmental space where clients feel empowered to explore their true thoughts and feelings. I will use humor in sessions when it is appropriate and tend to draw examples from movies, television shows and pop culture to help a concept seem more relatable.

When I am not working, I spend time with my 3 dogs and 4 cats and love to travel domestically and internationally. I enjoy watching movies, attending concerts, eating Texas BBQ & Tex-Mex, and have an appreciation of a large range of music. I also enjoy attending conferences and trainings to deepen my knowledge in the world of mental health.
